Information

Every year there are exhibitions for stallions, mares, geldings and young horses. Even though the Norwegian Fjord horse is an old breed, breeding has only been organised since the mid-19th century. Nordfjordeid has been the centre of Fjord horse breeding, and the traditional stallion shows have generally taken place here i May every year.

What happens at a horse show (exhibition)?

At a horse show, horses are judged based on the goals set in the breeding plan. They receive scores in the following categories: type and expression, body conformation and musculature, leg alignment and leg quality, movement, and overall exterior. The judges' evaluation is subjective, and it determines what level of award (premium) each horse receives. Judges can also choose to rank horses in a "quality group." This is done with horses that the judges feel stood out especially well that day, and it is up to the judges to decide how many horses to place in this group in each class.

During the conformation assessment, the horse must be shown at walk and trot, and presented standing still so that the judges can assess the horse’s exterior and legs. It is important to train for this before the show day to present the horse in the best possible way.
